Just as Wells is historic, we too have an illustrious history. Although not a great year for big events in the world, 1623 was a great year for Wells. It had been granted a Royal Charter by Queen Elizabeth I and, for reasons lost in the mist of time, as a result, it was felt that it needed a gaol. The good burghers of Wells built a solitary cell, which you can still see today, along with a set of barred windows and some instruments of torture. The building remained in use as a gaol for the next two hundred years until 1810 (when lots of other things were going on in Europe, mainly revolving around some chap called Napoleon) when it was converted into an abattoir. Sometime later it was decided that the abattoir was no longer necessary but a public house was essential and the Rainbow public house was born which eventually turned into the City Arms. Time does not stand still and with the addition of four luxurious en-suite bedrooms we are no longer just a public house but we are also an inn.

We are dog friendly and welcome our fur-friends, some of them, so long as they are well-behaved, have their own bedding and are no bigger than a terrier, can even stay with their families in our rooms. Naturally we have our regulars, such as Jake the Border Terrier, whose picture you will see dotted around the site, Jack the English Bull Terrier and not forgetting Bo and Gershwin, two Tibetan Spaniels who drop by to say hello. Jake even has his own blog in which he sometimes writes about some of the goings-on in the pub – if you read his blog you will see that we often have to bribe him to write nice things about us with either one of our local butcher’s award winning sausages or a ham platter fit for a local doganality.
